This is the first edition of the weekly Something plant-based post. I’ll be covering different topics about plant-based nutrition with the intention to inspire, motivate, and teach everyone interested in eating more plants.
Something delicious
A while ago, when I was searching for vegan recipes, I came across The Korean Vegan blog by Joanne. I was clicking through some of her recipes and then I clicked play on a video recipe. An hour flew by like it was minutes. Her voice is captivating and her ability to tell stories is out of this world. Here is a story about how she met her husband Anthony accompanied by her making a vegan chocolate cake recipe. It's like poetry meets food. Perfection.
Something inspiring
Here is something inspiring from a blog post written by cardiologist Danielle Belardo (MD) who believes in comprehensive, evidence-based preventive cardiology care: “The good news is, over 80% of heart disease is preventable with lifestyle changes and appropriate medical therapy.” That’s really good news! Why isn’t everybody talking about that? If you want to learn more about plant-based nutrition by someone who lives by what she preaches, follow her on Twitter.
Something informative
A study about meat consumption called Meat Atlas 2021 - Facts and figures about the animals we eat was recently published. The facts and numbers in the atlas show us what the scientists have been saying for over a decade. The current consumption of meat is driving us into a climate disaster. Industrial meat is a critical issue in our society, and we'll have to make some changes if we want to help our planet to heal.
Something new
If you are wondering how to substitute meat in your meals, I have 12 suggestions for you. Tofu is the most versatile food that you can use in sauces, salads, soups, creams, or cakes. You can also use seitan or tempeh if you want to replace meat steaks. Jackfruit is great for “chicken” stripes, and lentils are delicious in bolognese sauces or lasagna. Beans and chickpeas can be used for burgers. You can also choose from a variety of store-bought plant-based alternatives like plant-based meat crumbles, patties, “chicken” tenders, sausages, slices from Beyond meat, Impossible meats, Tofurky, Gardein, and more. These foods are all protein-rich so you’re not missing out on protein if you don’t add meat to your plate.
Something fun
And why not end this newsletter with a joke? Do you know why did the tofu cross the road? - To prove he wasn't chicken. 😂
